Local Missions
Backpack Ministry
The backpack ministry provides donations to students at Buchanan Elementary, as well as several other local Botetourt County Schools. The donations include food for weekend meals, school supplies, and special items during holiday seasons. This ministry is used to provide support to children who may not receive three meals a day outside of school
Woodcutting for Local Families
The woodcutting ministry is a partnership with the Botetourt County Resource Center. Church members cut and deliver wood to Botetourt County residents who heat their homes with wood.
WMU (Woman’s Missionary Union)
Mill Creek Baptist Church has two WMU groups that meet monthly.
- The Daytime Mission Group meets at 10am on the first Tuesday of each month at the church. They have a potluck lunch after the meeting and a time for fellowship.
- The BWNG (Baptist Women’s Night Group) meets at 6pm on the second Monday of each month at various locations. Location is always announced in the newsletter and the church bulletin.
Both groups have the same goals:
-To study about missions locally, nationally, and internationally.
-To support missions through prayer and giving.
-To participate in mission action projects which assist local ministries.
-To enjoy fellowship with one another.
Prayer Blanket Ministry
A group of church members from Mill Creek who make fleece blankets for children and adults who have been faced with a health crisis. Members pray for the individual over the blanket as they make them. Blankets are then distributed to those in need of prayer.
Greater Outdoor Ministries
The Greater Outdoor Ministry through MCBC provides many opportunities for those who love the outdoors. This ministry runs a handicap hunt each fall, a fishing rodeo each spring, and family camping trip in the summer. Mill Creek’s Greater Outdoor Ministry is ever changing and always adding new events.
Roanoke Valley Baptist Mission Centers in Downtown Roanoke
The Roanoke Valley Baptist Mission Centers include the SW Friendship house on Elm Avenue and the SE Community Center on 17th Street in Roanoke, VA. The RVBMC provides after-school and summer programs for children, a food pantry for local families, and bible studies for adults. Mill Creek Baptist Church supports the Roanoke Valley Mission Centers by providing volunteers, food and toiletries donations, and trips to Camp Bethel for a fishing rodeo and Limestone Park in the summer.
Weekday Religious Education
Weekday Religion Education is a program wherein the public schools, with parent’s written permission, release students to go to off-campus locations for biblical instruction. WRE in Botetourt County is taught by Mike Woody for students attending Buchanan & Cloverdale Elementary, Nancy Young for students attending Colonial & Troutville Elementary & David Cox for students attending Greenfield, Eagle Rock & Breckinridge. This program is funded by local churches, businesses, civic organizations & individuals.
National Missions
Alaska Mission Team – July
The Alaska team works with missionary Brenda Crim by providing support services for the mission teams in Alaska during the dip net season at the Kenai River. The team travels to Alaska during this time to help Brenda and her team.
Standing Rock Mission Team – July
Mill Creek Baptist Church, partnered with the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association, and several other area churches travel to North and South Dakota to assist children and adults at the Standing Rock Indian reservation. Teams provide meals, crafts, and bible stories to both children and adults in Standing Rock.
SW VA Partnership Mission Trip - March
Mill Creek Baptist Church, partnered with the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association, and several other area churches travel to far Southwest Virginia to minister to children and adults. The team helps by providing construction workers/labor for repairs within the SW VA community. They also collect and distribute gentle used or new books, toiletries, and food pantry items. While in Nickelsville the team also visits the local nursing facility to minister to the citizens there.
BookNet – donation of gently used children’s books
BookNet is a program put in place to increase literacy and the love of literacy in children. BookNet collects gently used or new books to be distributed to children by the Standing Rock and Nickelsville mission teams.
International Missions
Dominican Republic Team
Mill Creek Baptist Church is proud to support the local Haitian and Dominican Baptist churches within the DR. The DR team helps to support a Christian school run by a church in Santo Domingo. The children attending this school would otherwise not be able to attend school. Many of these children also rely on the school for meals. When visiting the DR, the team runs a Vacation Bible School, with crafts, music, and Bible studies. They also lead a women’s Bible study and help with construction at the school and supporting church.
